Current Alert Status: YELLOW
Written on: Monday, May 11, 2009
Time: 9:11 PM

While Singapore currently has no cases of Influenza A (H1N1 2009), the virus has proven to be highly contagious. While we have shored up our defences in terms of temperature screening at air, land and sea check points and infection control measures at healthcare institutions, we can expect the virus to eventually affect Singapore as well.
In Alert Yellow, stringent border controls will still be maintained, with temperature screening at air, land and sea checkpoints. Home Quarantine Orders (HQO) will still apply to persons with a travel history to Mexico in the past seven days. The aim is to delay the entry of the virus into Singapore for as long as possible.
In Singapore, we had 1 additional case for investigations today. Of the 34 cases investigated thus far, 28 cases have tested negative for Influenza A, and 6 tested positive for the usual circulating seasonal flu strains.

Time: 12:06 AM

Current Alert* Status: Orange
Written on: Friday, May 1, 2009
Time: 1:36 PM

ALERT ORANGE: Virus becoming increasingly better adapted to humans but may not yet be fully transmissible, requiring close contact with an index case. Larger clusters appear in one or two places outside Singapore but a pandemic has not yet been declared.
Situation in Singapore:
Even though as of 30th April 2009, there are no human cases of Mexican Swine Influenza in Singapore, MOH will be upgrading our Disease Outbreak Response System Alert status from Yellow to Orange. There is a real possibility that such cases may surface in Singapore and we must be prepared at all fronts to delay its spread to Singapore for as long as possible
What can I do to protect myself and others against the Flu?
Practise good personal hygiene and be socially responsible by:
▪ Washing your hands regularly and thoroughly with soap and water, especially before touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
▪ Turning quickly away from anyone near you if you are about to cough or sneeze, and do not cough or sneeze at him.
▪ Covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Dispose of the tissue properly in the dust bin after use.
▪ Avoiding crowded places if you are unwell and wear a surgical mask to cover your nose and mouth.
▪ Staying home from work or school when you are sick.
▪ Using a serving spoon when sharing food at meal times.
▪ Seeing your family doctor if you are feeling unwell.
Also, leading a healthy lifestyle helps to build up your immunity and protects you against infection.▪ Eat a balanced diet, including plenty of fruit and vegetables.
▪ Be active. Do 30 minutes of physical activity at least 5 days a week.
▪ Learn to relax and have enough sleep and rest.
▪ Do not smoke.
